Cala
Scottish trad band
Cala, a Scottish trad band hailing from Inverness, has quickly established themselves as a fresh and original voice within Scotland’s thriving contemporary traditional music scene. Since their formation in 2020, Cala has showcased a dynamic approach to traditional music, drawing inspiration from their roots while pushing into new musical territories. Their debut single “Causeway” marked their arrival, followed by the well-received album “From the River” in 2023, which captured both the vibrancy and contemplative spirit of Scottish folk. Their subsequent releases, such as “Two-stroke Wheelbarrow” and the 2024 track “Pillars,” have demonstrated Cala’s willingness to experiment with new sounds and textures, evolving their creative direction.
Live performance is central to Cala’s identity. The band has appeared at acclaimed festivals including The Reeling, Festival Interceltique du Lorient, and Under Canvas, and they’ve been invited back to celebrated events like The Gathering and Belladrum. In November 2025, Cala headlined An Seòmar in Inverness, illustrating their appeal in their home city. Their self-promoted “THE WORLD TOUR (of Scotland)” in autumn 2024 further cemented their reputation for energetic gigs and a deep connection to their audience, blending fan favourites with innovative new material.
Cala continue to write new music with an ever-present passion and a keen eye toward originality. For those seeking invigorating live music experiences and innovative takes on Scottish trad, Cala are a group to watch closely.
