US-based English composer
Jane Antonia Cornish stands out as a celebrated British composer, weaving together evocative strands of modern classical music. Based in the United States but deeply rooted in her English heritage, Cornish explores themes such as time, silence, and transcendence throughout her six acclaimed studio albums. Her recent release, Sierra (2022), showcases her nuanced compositional style in a work for multiple pianos, performed by Bang on a Can All-Star Vicky Chow and released by Cantaloupe Music. Critics have praised Sierra for its poetic meditations and its unique connection to the natural world, distinguishing Cornish as a significant voice in contemporary concert and art music.
Cornish’s creative output extends well beyond her recorded catalogue, encompassing film scores and collaborations with luminaries in ballet and the visual arts. Her music has accompanied productions by the Royal Swedish Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet. Notably, she broke new ground as the first woman in history to win a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for music and has contributed scores to films such as Fireflies in the Garden and De Fortabte Sjæles Ø (Island of Lost Souls). Her earlier albums, including Constellations, Into Silence, and Continuum, have each drawn critical acclaim, affirming her reputation for mesmerising and thought-provoking chamber music.
