The stadium was inaugurated on 31 October 1903 and was, at that time, the largest stadium in the world. Notably, it holds the European record for the highest attendance at a football match, with 149,415 spectators for a Scotland versus England fixture in 1937. Hampden Park has also hosted major events such as the 1960 European Cup Final and the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and was significantly modernised in 1999.
