Hackney Empire is a large historic theatre designed by Frank Matcham and opened in 1901 as a music hall, now hosting a diverse range of performances including theatre, live music, opera, comedy, dance, and pantomime. It underwent significant restoration, reopening in 2003, and gained a reputation in the 1980s as a hub for alternative comedy.
